CREATING FUTURE MEMORIES OF CHILDREN'S PIANO LESSONS

I often ask myself, "Why do kids even bother to come back to piano lessons?"

The obvious answer is, "Because Mom says so."

But actually, if the child says that they want to quit, and really means it, most Moms will listen and let the child quit.

My point is that there must be a general reason why my students return for another half hour of this rather difficult art. Very few will ever be able to say, "Vladimir Horowitz," let alone play like him (as if any of us will.)

Why do they return?

There's only one reason: the child has happy memories of the last lesson.

In other words, piano teachers, you're only as good as your last lesson.

I don't mean that you have to patronize, or cater to the child. I mean that if you have any sense of strategy, you'll see that getting the child to return is an absolute necessity.

The old type of piano teacher used guilt to get the child to return. "You practice that dull exercise or I'll get mad," is the essence of the pedagogue's manner.

What that teacher is really saying is, "I'm too lazy or ignorant to find a clever way of teaching you today, so just do what's in the book or risk my displeasure."

As an example, I witnessed a miracle today with an 11 year-old boy, for the precise reason given above. He didn't feel like playing, but I took time to find a way to make him want to.

This child is already an extraordinary natural talent. If he is in the mood and interested, he can learn music far beyond him. His grasp of chords and structure is top-notch, and he has a fabulous memory. His music reading skills, like almost all children, lag far behind his ability to understand and play music.

But today he didn't feel like playing Beethoven or anything else, really. So we embarked on an easygoing look at chords, with him yawning and squirming.

Suddenly I played a juicy blues ninth chord or two, and his eyes lit up.

"You like blues?" I asked. Boy, did he.

I quickly taught him a blues scale, in C, and he was off to the races. I showed him the standard little blues licks, or those he could play easily.

I started vamping a typical walking blues bass line, very simple, and showed him where he might play his little solo bits.

Within a few minutes, he was making up excellent solos, a few bars at a time.

He was radiant. He said, "This is the stuff I want to play!"

We went further. I explained how jazz musicians leave spaces, so that the musical space isn't all cluttered with too many notes. He grasped this instantly, and started delivering chord chops with the taste of a 52nd street bluesman. Spare and lean, not at all like a child.

His dad was on the phone with his Mom, and asked, "What are you listening to a jazz record for?"

Mom laughed and answered happily, "It's your son!"

When I left, that kid was grinning from ear to ear.

Most important was the look in his eye.

I think he realized he could make "real music," not that stuff in the books.

He just found HIS music.
