BUILDING A CHILD'S CONFIDENCE WITH NUMBERS

Most children of preschool age are just starting to understand numbers and counting.

Piano by Number offers a perfect opportunity for the child to explore the order of numbers, combining it with the pleasing sounds of music and the piano.

Following the easy directions in each book, your child is presented with a keyboard on which the central white keys have had numbered stickers applied.

It's easy for a child to see the numbers arrayed in a row, from 1-12.

Take a song like MARY HAD A LITTLE LAMB, and you have a perfect vehicle for exploring the sense of direction on the piano. Remember, on the piano up is to your right, and down is to your left.

It's important to not worry about fingering at this time. There will be time enough later, when you have interested the child in the instrument.

Most children will instinctively use the index finger. Whatever finger they choose, don't interfere or suggest anything in terms of finger choices. It's enough to let them enjoy familiar songs that they know, and the self-esteem that comes from playing them.

After you play several songs from a book such as PIANO IS EASY, try the following games.

Play the white keys ascending from number 1 to 12. Remark on the fact that, "We're going up!"

Play the white keys descending from number 12 to 1. Remark on the fact that, "We're going down!"

Kids will want to count the keys above 12, and you should encourage any enthusiasm they have, no matter what it is.

Play a game where you play a key, and then ask them to play the next key up or down. This brings up the issue of left and right, and requires them to use their eyes to choose the correct direction.

There are several valuable lessons to be learned from a numbered piano keyboard, especially by younger children still sorting out various motor skills:

  1. You must have awareness of left and right

  2. On the piano, this also translates to lower and higher.

  3. You must be able to distinguish the SYMBOLS for the numbers, a more advanced step than simply speaking the series of numbers.

  4. You must be able to jump around within the series of numbers. Not all music goes 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8.

 Continue to try to stimulate the child with the keyboard. Here are more ideas:

 Try to give them commands and see how they respond:

"Play two keys at once. Play 1 and 3." 

"Play any three keys in a row."

 "Play a key and then skip a key and play another. Keep skipping." (The result might be 1 3 5 7 9, etc. Or 2 4 6 8, etc.)

Most of all, find as many songs as you can that the child knows, and show them to the child at the piano. It's not necessary to use books. Use your adult brain and figure out songs that you both know if you cannot find the songs in books.

Capture the child's interest with familiar songs until they can be taught another of the basic skills of the piano.

The longer they play for fun, by number if necessary, the greater chance they have of developing a serious interest for the piano.
